In 2011, Oakland Bankruptcy Attorney Melanie Tavare won a complex tax discharablity case in front of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. This opinion has widely been recognized as a victory for debtors who have tax debt in bankruptcy. Because of this case, thousands of people spanning multiple states are now able to discharge certain taxes in their bankruptcy they would not have been allowed to before.
